Graduation Presentation

It was the culmination of my studies as an agronomic engeneering, the presentation was programed at 2:00 p.m. but I was in the auditurium since 8:00 a.m. I was very nervous, there were going to be five of the most experienced teachers in the topic of dairy science.

I remember that I was feeling a funny sensation in my stomach, similar to the feeling of seen the person you love, but not as good.

I asked my girlfriend for company to get some emotional support, it was the best idea I made that day. She suggest me that it would be a good idea to present the material to her as if she were one of the teachers. That practice allowed me to performe the presentation more fluently. I couldn’t have lunch that day because I was too nervous.

The moment has arrived it was 2:00 o clock in the afternoon, at that right moment i felt more confident because one of the judges was an all life friend of mine.

The presentation last one hour and another hour for the questions. After that, the chair man told me: now you have compleated the requirements to get your tittle.

First Time

First time on a plane

It happen in august 18^th 2008, my sisters and I decide to travel to Europe on a 15 day long trip, until that day I had never been on a plane.

I was very anxious, the first flight was from Alajuela to Miami, I remember that my hands were sweating, and then I realized that I was extremely nervous.  My sisters were making jokes about it; I think they enjoyed that flight more than I did.

Comment About Topics

My group was formed by Alejandra, Karen and Rosario, so I have to comment about their blogs, in the Halloween topic, Alejandra and Karen decided to look for the history of that tradition but Rosario instead chose an original way to talk about that topic, I believe that Rosario wanted to make it in her own way.

Alejandra used a scary picture to represent the main idea of the topic, and Karen chose to take it easy by not looking for pictures (As I do), I believe that they three made a terrific (outstanding) homework by getting into a further knowledge of the topic.

Crime Topic

In order to accomplish the Nº2 homework, I have chosen a song to comment about it, “Bad Boys” is that song.  Since I was very young, I remember to hear this song in the radio, and T.V. but I never thought that it has an important message, and it is that bad people generally comes from an ordinary family and they as every human being have beloved persons, but they take that way because of bad decisions.

To me, the most meaningful part of the song is:  “why did you have to act so mean, don’t you know you’re human being, born of a mother with the love of a father”.  This phrase explains that most of the people that have committed a crime were race with love, as any of us.

I chose this song because it is very familiar to me, and I have heard it a lot of times.

Jack o'lantern

I found and article about the history of the Jack o'lantern, it explains that this tradition began long time ago from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack”, who tricked the devil several times, “Stingy Jack” even tricked  the devil by making him promise that when “Stingy Jack” die, the devil couldn’t claim his soul.  Eventually “Stingy Jack” died but God didn’t allow him get into heaven, and he couldn’t get into hell because the devil had promised it. So the devil sent Jack off into the dark night with a kind of candle, that he put into a carved turnip. Now the pumpkin is used to remember jack of the lantern or simply Jack o'lantern.

It’s interesting to think about such a smart person that can trick the devil so easily, also is interesting to learn about the origin of that tradition, and read that few Americans really know why or when the jack o'lantern tradition began.

Achievement of goals in the AD-1 Course so far

Goals for the AD-1 English Course

My goals for this course are: Keep practicing spoken English, learning about new topics; increase my vocabulary, attending classes as a way to improve grammar, pronunciation and fluency. I also want to use this course as a tool to achieve a higher score in the TOEFL and GRE tests next year, because probably I will need those tests to be accepted in OHIO State in two or three years to get my M.Sc. or PhD.

How can I contribute to the English classes?

By not been ashamed of asking a lot of questions, that can help somebody else.

I think that the AD-1 Course have been very useful as a part in the process of learning English, I also think that when I will finish the whole program, I will achieve most of my current goals.

Another Five News

6- Iran is armed with nuclear weapons.
If Iran has launched a missile to another country, it might have caused a war.

7- H1N1 Disease was eradicated from Costa Rica.
If the disease had extended to millions of people, many lives could have been lost.

8- In 2008 started the economical crisis.
If this crisis had started in 2005, too many people could have been in poverty by now.

9- Last week Barcelona won a basketball game against the Lakers.
If the Lakers have won that game it could not be an important new.

10- Last month the police arrested a murder who killed 10 people in the last two years.
If the police had caught him earlier, to many lives could have been saved.

Outstanding Facts

1 - Miners stuck in Chile: 33 miners are stuck 700 meters under de surface but fortunatly they are alive.
-If the tons of soil have fallen over the miners, they would been dead by now.

2 -  Some congress representatives were trying to rise their own salaries.
-If they have done this, poople could have been protesting.

3- In Costa Rica, the last month rained more than the last year.
If Costa Rica had been a flat country, the whole country would have been flooded..

4- A bridge felt down in Orotina.
If this bridge had been used for more cars, a lot of people could have been injured or dead.

5- Caldera highway is Dangerous.
If this highway had been better planed, people could have been enjoy it by now. 

Monteverde

It is situated in high mountains of Puntarenas at an altitude of about 2400 meters sea level, the town was developed by Quakers families that came 60 years ago from the U.S. running away from military service and looking for a peaceful place to live, in 1953 they started a cheese factory, it was a little family cottage industry, now it became a 200 employees industry.         

There are just two public buses to San José the first one takes off at 6:30 a.m. and de second one at 1:00 p.m. Public buses from San José arrives to Monteverde at 11:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m.

 Monteverde is visited for many tourists all year long from countries all over the world and they came in rented cars.

It’s very common to see people walking in path ways in the forest, looking for different kinds of animals like quetzals and bats they also are looking for plants besides the wonderful views; there are also a lot of adventure attractions like canopy and hanging bridges.

In December there is a festival of light that attracts people from all near towns. There is a mountain bike competition in October, and people come from all the country to watch it.

People are very gentle and kind; most of them are factory workers, farmers, and tourist guides that enjoy their work.

Monteverde is a very calmed place, ideal for resting, there are not too much night activities, and however there are good hotels and restaurants close to nature. 

Monteverde deserves a great future in nature maintenance and sustainable development to reward the sacrifices of their founders.

The Golden Shrimp, Restaurant Review.

This place is a high quality seafood restaurant placed in Brazilito beach next to Conchal beach in Guanacaste, the tables are on the sand, and there is nothing between you an the great ocean view, it has three waiters, and when you arrive, they clean your hands with bougainvillea water, main dishes included boiled lobster and fried shrimps, you can enjoy of this tasty food for a reasonable price, and get pleasure from the sunset.       

My Father’s Profile

My father’s name is Alejandro Saborío Villegas; he was born in San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica in 1936. When he was 20 years old he graduated as a school teacher and decides to learn English by himself, so he start to read books using the dictionary and he bought a tape recorder to listen English classes as a device to help him learn, he started university at 23, working during the morning and afternoon in a private school in San José, and attending English classes at the university from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. He couldn’t finish his career because of economical reasons. In 1965 he started teaching English at the Palmares high school for one year and then he went to Naranjo for 3 more years, then he came to San Ramón, his own city, and continue teaching in this high school until he retired in 1986. He has continued learning English by reading books and learning new vocabulary, his last book is “The dream of my father” from Barack Obama.   

   

He has been married to my mother since 1970, from this marriage there are five seedlings, four daughters and one son, four of them are graduated as professionals from the University of Costa Rica (UCR).

His favorite hobby is reading (his favorite book is Don Quixote), and been at home, he also enjoys good cooking; he dislikes been at meetings and cigarette smoke. The best achievement for him in his life has been the success of his seedlings.

He is got a lot of faith in God, and the holy bible is the rule of his life.

And just for the record, he has been an excellent father.

Writing Task Comment About Karen Planet

I think that Naningo Planet is inhabited by teenagers full of hope and good feelings (just like Karen) that enjoy life day by day without thinking to much in future and enjoying it that way.

Writing Task Environment Planet

Environmentalists from environmental planet grant new findings and technologies that can be used to achieve permanent stability of the environment.

They experience fulfilment through enjoying outside views full of nature, they use outfits made of natural fibers that do not pollute, but actually this is not an important issue to them.

The most important thing to environmentalist is the keeping of life on the planet by production of food without disturbing of  the environment.

The environmentalist feel proud when they see new generations practicing the same habits of conservation of the environment, and the most annoying thing to them is the pollution caused by careless.
